I recently purchased a 1985 Catalina 30, with an Origo two-burner non-pressurized alcohol stove. The operating directions for the stove did not come with the boat. Can anyone give me a concise primer of how to safely light and perate the Origo stove?

Dave, Pull the little knob on the front to open

the stove lid so you can remove the canisters. You will see a small indention in the screen surface where it meets the canister. Tilt the canister until it is vertical with the indent at the 6 o'clock positiion and pour alcohol into it until the liquid level rises to the indent. About 3 cups. Reinstall the canisters and close the stove lid. Take the lever control in front of the burner and open it. Now with one of those long candle lighters (bic), simply reach in and light the top of the canister. The lever is your heat control. I usually lift the lid and light the canister then close the lid with the lever open. We only fill one canister at a time as we rarely use both burners. A standard kitchen sink ruber drain cover (round and about 3 inches accross) makes a great canister cover. When we are done with the stove and after it is cool we put that cover over the canister opening to keep the alcohol from evaporating when not in use. Lift the stove top to place this lid over the canister. Ray S/V Speedy

Dave, You can download and print owner's manuals from the Origo website. Look under products, find your stove, and download the .pdf file. The website URL is http://www.origo-sweden.com/products_f.html Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

Manuals on web site?

I would love a manual for my 6000 but I don't see any on the web site Rodney mentioned. Could someone direct me please. Thanks. Rip

I also have an Origo. If you can't get the instruction manual, let me know. I will copy mine and e-mail it to you. Only a couple of pages.

Manuals on Website

Rip, Manuals off the website are only available for the 1500 and 3000 model stoves. The 3000 manual would be applicable to the top part of the 6000 stove. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

Flame Dispersal

David, Several years ago, Origo was offering free flame dispersal units. They are a metal piece that fit inside the flame "tunnel" and help disperse the flame over a broader area for more even heating. Their web site may have that part listed. After I installed them on my Hunter 30T, it resulted in much faster heating of whatever was on the stove. Good luck, Steve

Flame dispersal

I emailed Origo for the part and they sent it free of charge from Sweden. I received it within 3 days of emailing them! One extra tip that I've read and since have taken, is to pour the alcohol into the canisters AWAY from the stove itself (say the cockpit or sink). This way if any alcohol dribbles anywhere it shouldn't be, it won't catch on fire. LaDonna

Not much to an Origo!

David; another thing is to make sure that the canister is not hot when you try to fill the canister. It does not take too much to heat to ignite alcohol so fill it over the sink (that is a good place). Pour you alcohol into another container to fill the canister. I like a container like a ketsup squeeze bottle like the use in the restaurants (rubber maid makes them too). It makes directing the fluid much easier (less waste).

Turkey baster, great idea!

Ted: That is a great idea. I'll steal the one out of the kitchen and she will never know!

La Donna, what is the correct e-mail address

for Origo in Sweden. I've tried www.origo-sweden.com and the message won't go. I want to order two of the flame dispersers. Thanks, Tom

Works for me.

The Origo site works for me or you can try www.interconmktg.com for their US distributor. I got mine from Inter Con Marketing and they sent them N/C. Bob Gravenstine S/V Gravyboat

Origo

Their 800 # is in either the Boat US or West Marine catalog. That's how I got them N/C.

Tom...

FYI, www.origo-sweden.com isn't an email address, its a website address. Use info@origo-sweden.com to request the dampers. LaDonna
