Lifting batteries

Time to remove one of my house bank batteries. T-1275 weighs 100 lbs. Luckily, my battery box is directly under a large hatch which is directly under the end of the boom. So my 5:1 preventer will make this easy.

But...I dont have the old plastic carry handle that came with the batteries. So I have a new idea. Screw a short female threaded rod onto the battery posts and then screw an eye bolt into the top of the female threaded rod and tie a line between the 2 eyebolts to lift.

Is there any issue with lifting the battery by its lugs?

you better off slide a sling underneath. You screw can pull out.

No room to get under. A tight fit all around in the box

They make a battery lifting handle that should work, put a topping lift to the end of the boom while lifting.

No direct experience with this battery, but does it look like this one:

Just rig up a bridle to the spots on top that are designed for it. (It's what I do for GC2's)
Then get it out of the box, and then run a strap underneath to prevent it from breaking off and going through the floor of the boat... If not, you can try pulling em up by the posts just enough to get a strap underneath. The posts aren't all that strong though.

you could use a hose clamp on each post. Tie a line around the two clamps and lift using this as a handle. I would only use it to get it high enough to put a couple of straps under the battery.

Battery will have to clear the battery box. Tight on all 4 sides.

I do have a topping lift.

Yes, that is the battery...and seeing it out of the box I just noticed 4 ears on the case!! Looks like 4 S hooks are on my shopping list instead.

The T1275's have four plastic lifting spots on top of each battery. Some 1/4" line and some knots and away they go...

I haven't forgotten my "frozen shoulder" from when I removed the 4D's form my Catalina 309. I'd never heard of a frozen shoulder before, but swinging those stupid 4D's around led to my education. Ouch.

I replaced the 4D's with 6v golf cart batteries wired for 12V (thanks, MaineSail). I NEVER want to carry heavy batteries again.
