Hunter 23.5 N/A
I am interested in lifting a Hunter 23.5 to replace the re-furnished centerboard. My question is, how long do the straps have to be and how far apart should they be placed on the boat? I intend to connect the straps together on each side so they don’t slip. I am lifting the boat with a car lift in our farm shop.

A third in from each end would be fine or at the location of your end of bunk supports on your trailer. More importantly is the width of the strap, 3" or wider would be nice as it spreads the load out. You are only looking at 1500 lb load per strap. Length depends on your attachment point on your hoist. You could always use good quality load rated rope to make up the differance if the straps are to short.

The teeth that lock many two post auto lifts are very small. I suggest a beam across the arms so the arms aren't being pulled inwards. For clarification, you would need two beams perplendicular to the boat

Suggest 6 inch wide straps and tie them each side together to keep them from sliding apart. Suggest the use of z4 jack stands stands for safety. Dry weight minus motor and gearn for boat is 2000 lbs

Straps should be placed fore and aft of the keel in most cases. Sometimes, due to prop shafts and other components it's not possible but that's usually with bigger boats. I lifted a 19' boat with two chain hoists and a couple of large straps. because I didn't use any beam or bars to attach the straps to, it squeezed the boat sideways and I ended up with spider cracks on the interior floor.

To measure the length of the strap, take a piece of string, line, etc, and wrap it around the boat as if it was a strap, then measure.

Boat stands would be best but if that's not an option, at the very least lower the boat on to something to steady it while working on it. A dangling boat over one's head is a bit daunting, especially when the shoal keel could act as a guillotine!

Putting the straps at the location of a bulkhead is another good place but this is a fairly lightweight boat so use your best judgement
