I am needing to replace the plastic cover on my lifelines of my Hunter 26.5. Does anyone know the diameter of the cable so I can order the replacement covers.

Covers for Lifelines

You really can't replace the existing plastic thats extruded onto your existing lifelines. However, most suppliers such as Boat US or West Marine have white plastic covers that are split longitudidally and can be snapped over the exisitng lifeline. This is an attractive and inexpensive fix. Suggest you measure your lifeline diameter with a ruler or caliper and buy 1 length and see how it fits befor buying enough for the whole boat. Also, you may find that the uppers are larger than the lower life lines.

Plastic Covers are a No No!

As noted, the lifeline covering is applied as an extrusion (hot) and it bonds with the strands to make a covering that is strong and takes abuse well. Applying split plastic/Teflon covers over the lifelines is a cheap and unsafe practice. The covers you find in all the marine supply houses are sold as shroud covers and are intended to reduce the friction where sails/sheets pass across them (they also look pretty). If someone grabs the lifeline with plastic covers, they may find themselves clutching a length of plastic when they hit the deck or worse yet, when they hit the drink. If you have some of the plastic covers on your shrouds, do a few simulated falls while grabbing the plastic covered area. I think you will see what I mean. IMHO, SAFE is Better, do it right and replace the lifelines (that's what I'm doing this year).

rip off

boatu.s., etc are are rip off re life lines. look around the hardware stores, e.g. home depot and you will find what you want for half the price - exactly the same thing - and as strong, etc. an old fashioned store, if you can find one will cut and make good the lnes for you if necessary. doing it this year on our 26.5

Ted: Are you sure that Home Depot has stranded S.S. w/vinyl coating. I havn't seen it so I am not sure that it is not there. Just checking because that is one of my fall projects. Thanks

do it yourself

We just replaced our lifelines. Got a bid from a rigging shop to do it for $750.00 and we did it for $250.00. It was no walk in the park but now we are thinking of doing it for other people. We did a great job and what a rip off at $750.00!!!!
