Uncoated stainless

Our friends used uncoated stainless this year to redo the lifelines on their '81 h30. They look great, and have all the advantages cited by Casey in Good Old Boat. That's what we will do next time.

I undersatand the simplicity of just having lifelines as ss only, without the vinyl covering. However, have you ever agressinvely touched the ss cable, i.e. regarding grabing it or bumping against it? The vinyl covering will allow for less traumatic contact then with the bare ss cable. There must be a reason lots of lifelines are covered with a vinyl cover. Can anyone explain this?
