Lifeline replacement

I recently purchased a 1994 351. The top, portside lifeline is slack, and the threads are maxed out at the bow. There is room to tighten where the lifeline meets the boarding gate, aft, but previous owner use a non-stainless nut, which is completely frozen, so I can't thread the lifeline more. The stanchion that the lifeline goes into has a kind of ball-and-socket set up, so that I cannot access the other end of the lifeline (it is essentially hidden in the stanchion). Any dieas about how I can fix this?

Cut off the locking nut

Not sure if you can but have you thought about cutting the rusted nut off? Spray it with WD40 or some other spray that will help break the rust down and try cutting through the nut with a hacksaw. You may be able to cut enough away to allow you to break the remainder off. Be careful not to cut the threaded rod. If all else fails you'll have to replace the entire lifeline and fittings. ALso check to see if the bow rail is out of alignment. If it took a hit it would have moved and caused slack in the lifelines. Unfortunately I know this from experience.

lifelines

Of course! The boat I bought had indeed taken (or more likely given) a hit, and slightly dented the pulpit, which must have resulting in the slack in the lifeline. I suppose I could try to straighten the pulpit. The damage was minor, but enough to create the slack. Thanks again.

Bent pulpit

David good luck trying to reshaping the pulpit. I had knocked mine out of place to such a slight extent I couldn't see it. I knew it had moved because I suddenly had slack in my Stbd lifeline. Try as I may there was no way I could bend it back. I ultimately took the upper lifeline to a rigger and had it shortened by an inch or two. He had to swage a new end fitting and the whole modification only cost apx $25. Good luck Mike
