I ran across a service that will recondition or dip your lifelines so that they look new. They had to be in "safe" condition & pass their 5 point inspection. I am now looking for the link to the company but can't seem to find it. Does anyone have any information? Our lifelines are good but dirty and the plastic is cracked in parts. They & the hardware are in good condition - no safety issue.

Have you thought about having the cover stripped off and leaving it that way? I know lots of people like the look of white lifelines, but covered lifelines have been banned from all off-shore racing, and for good reason. The cover deprives the SS wire from oxygen, and that allows it to corrode. And you can't see it happening. Even better, just replace it with new 1x19 SS wire. Just my 2 cents... I know its not my money we are spending! ;^)

Seco South made those lifelines. They can replace them either coated or uncoated. If you just buy the lifelines with studs they are not that expensive, especially the bare wire. I just bought all new for my 37-footer, coated, for around $250.
Are they safe? If they are cracked, there has been water under the cover and possibly corrosion.
I had a cover line break without warning in a standing rigging appllication (screacher bridle on a large cat); when we looked at the ends, it was clear that nearly all of the wire was corroded away.
Really, this sounds like a worthless service.
Better still, replace the steel with spectra line and have a stronger and much more 'hand' friendly line. You'll never have to worry about a rusted crimp coming apart again.
If your steel is still in good shape and want to save money you could strip them of that plastic coating and recover them with the plastic shroud covers they sell at WM for about $3.00 each.

After seeing our friends Halberg Rossi 39 with its bare ss wire lifelines there was no way I'd ever go with white plastic again. When we replaced our Island Packet 38 lifelines I went to the same O.D. ss wire as the O.D. of the original plastic coated lifelines. It wasn't outragiously higher in cost over the std. issue lines and they actually felt like they would keep you on the boat if you fell into them. And lets face it, looks do count.

Alan: When I replace my lifelines, perhaps next season, I'll prolly go with spectra. What do you use or how do you connect them to end fittings/tangs?
