Lifeline Netting alternatives

We want to put lifeline netting on our boat for our kids, but don't really like the kind they sell at West Marine. I heard, but have been unable to find, that someone sells a system over the internet. Does anyone know of some good looking alternatives to the white netting they sell at the store? Thanks, Jack

Forget the netting, and..............

.......invest in appropriate harnesses and jacklines. Depending on netting as part of your overall safety program is just plain dangerous. Teach your children the safe way from the get-go, they'll learn how to stay on the boat, or at least with the boat. Just my opinion.

I agree with Marcus

Harnesses and jacklines work for the big kids, why not the little ones too? Knowing and using safety equipment is a good habit to get into.

Marcus, how has the harness worked out?

Marcus, how has the harness worked with your kids? Do they put it on all the time? And how does it restrict their mobility on the boat?

My experience with kids is.......

....limited to friends. One in particular though has a very active two-three year old who uses his harness automatically. His dad's rule is simple: no tethered harness-no get on the boat. Period. End. I subscribe to this theory. BTW, most people think the netting looks crappy-that's all they hounded me about after I purchased my last boat, which came with the stuff. Not many boats up here have it-false sense of security. Good luck with your kids. You might want to throw a doll overboard or something to start inculcating MOB strategies. Never too early.

How about these nets?

PFDs with harnesses and tethers are good ideas, as is MOB training. But does this answer your question? http://www.capenorth.com/pages/1/index.htm Drew Dolak

Go with a tether

We opted to skip the netting and go with a tether for our 22 month old. It's worked out great and provides a lot more peace of mind than netting would. Under sail we tether him to the pedestal. When anchored or docked we can attach the tether anywhere on deck we want him to be. One additional point is that we spent the extra $$ to get a hybrid-inflatable for the "baby" and an automatic inflatable PFD for our 8 year old. Since they are much more comfortable (less bulky, cooler), they never complain about wearing them. Harry

Netting website

Friends purchased excellent quality netting from www.sterlingnets.com for their cat. Another friend bought those netting panels from www.capenorth.com for his three cats. Both look great and I will be deciding between those two for my own kittie.
