Scott, glad you have a good outcome. I had heart surgery a year ago, (aortic stenosis) and explain to my friends
" nothing like a little heart surgery to make a believer out of you"! Resolve yourself to a future of exercise, weight loss, diet changes etc. I believe that seeing me stick with that regamine has eased managments concerns a little about soloing in my boat, she is a little less anxious about my condition and activities. She did reveal that it demonstrated to her my comittment to healing and behaving. Good luck to you both, i think your future is good.

OMG Scott! Now that is scary! I'm so happy that you made it through and, while not really liking your post, I'm damned glad you could make this post!

There are major life events that shape our future. You will find the right pathway forward for yourself and your wife. Sailing may or may not be in that pathway, only you can decide. Take some time to decide, build your pathway forward slowly and within your comfort zone. Now this being said, you damn well better keep posting here no matter!

Glad to hear that things are looking up, Scott! Scary stuff..
A couple of weeks ago, I helped my buddy move his boat from Pensacola back to our marina in Mandeville. It is a roughly 3 day run .. He had a cardiac incident three years ago and is back sailing and enjoying life in general. You did well getting to help quickly.. I'll salute you with a little Sailor Jerry when I am allowed to head out (2 weeks) after prostate removal. (ain't getting old something?, but as my dad used to say, "....better than the alternative") Best to you for a speedy recovery!

Geeze.... that sounds like a close call. You said...
... Now, it is clear that she is afraid for me to spend independent time on the boat, mostly because it is 2 hours from our home. After the shock of this circumstance has worn off, I am wondering how it is going to be resolved.
I might have a suggested tool for you. About six years ago, my son was working on his masters thesis research and was living out of his truck (with his dog) in the Nantahala Forest. There was no cell service where he was... and the place was littered with rattle snakes, bear and coyote... I was nervous to say the least. I got him one of these for Christmas that year...

Is is basically a sat-phone that micro-bursts text messages so the cost is kept down. This is the older version and they now have more modern units that allow basic texting.

BUT here is the real bonus... it is a subscription service and you can pay for an insurance policy that will cover a medical helicopter evac if needed. At the time my son was using this service it was $250 for six months if you added the med-vac insurance. You hit the SOS button and help will be on the way. Or you hit the "OK" button and a preprogramed message is emailed to a list of up to 20 receipients. The message includes a GPS pin on a map so your friends and family can see where you are and know you are okay.

Hope you find a new normal.

So glad you are still with us!! And that’s an understatement. You write such positive contributions to the forum and have such a delightful profile photo that is always uplifting to see. It is hard to imagine you being so far down. Keep the wind in your sails on a starboard reach and feel the breeze on your cheek and the pull of the weather helm, and breathe deeply. You beat Davy Jones!! I’m sure you will be sailing again and for years to come.

Scott, my sailing buddy had a very similar story, he has really adhered to doctors advice and stayed fit and five years later he is still flying his own plane and enjoying life. Gods speed to you.

I must correct the error. Scott beat Davy Jones' Locker.

Davy Jones is the party master when crossing the equator for the first time for wetbacks. (Ask me why I know - easy - look up my name - the crap I get in sailing discussions) hahahahahaha

okay.... I took the bait and got this from uncle google...

Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) is a Financial Holding Company located in New York, NY United States, North America, and was founded in 1959. North America. Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Yep! Thats some exciting stuff...;)

Hahahahahaha - not my name, but very cool link...

I actually bought a book titled something like nautical traditions..I might have brought that book with me, I'll have to look. With my name being David Jones, I've gotten the Davy Jones comments often. I figured I'd research it. Apparently it was the movie the Pirates of the Caribbean that confused Davy Jones with Davy Jones' Locker. The later being the place of death for sailors, but Davy Jones is the party master for Neptune when doing the wetback ceremony for crossing the equator.

I seem to like that interpretation better...

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and advise! I'll be letting the dust settle for a while, but there is always great appreciation for all the encouragement that has been sent my way! @rgranger , I do have In-Reach ... I would be very interested to learn if they have the same service!

I have no first-hand experience with in-reach. But a new thread on the pros & cons of these various adventure-coms. devices might be valuable.

I sort of thought of my son's device as the "Help, I've Fallen and Can't Get Up" device for the outdoor enthusiast.

Hang in there, Scott. There is sailing afterwards. InReach has the evac service. I haven't signed up for it yet because most of my sailing is in sight of land. <- Admiral insists. I like the two way texts on InReach. When I bought it, Spot was only outbound messages.

My Heart event led me to buying my boat in 2014.

Started back to sailing again.

Note my first day on this site Hunter.Sailboatowners.com looking for OEM Parts

Feb 14, 2014

The day after our H430 was delivered to us in Gulfport, Mississippi.

I have a Defibrillator installed. My Admiral Sue was worried too.

We both feel Sailing has fresh air and good exercise combined.

So my Heart Event woke me up with a big boot in my Azz.

No Heart Event since then.

I’m a little late to the thread, but would like to add my voice to the long list offering support and encouragement. Glad that you were able to find thorough care near by when you really needed it! Good luck, heal fast, and have a speedy recovery! I hope to be reading about your first post-event sail some time soon.
