I have a set of lower shrouds that were given to me by a friend off his Down East 38 (1/4" I think, haven't measured them yet to confirm). They were replaced as preventative maintenance only, there is nothing wrong with them.

Is it ok to use them for new lifelines? My old ones are coated, and starting to show rust.

What fittings would you suggest? I have Johnson Controls fittings currently.

there is no reason not to if the cable is good.... when there is a failure its usually the cable that
fails under the end fittings, so if you cut then off and install new ones, you will be assured that it is safe and should work great as lifelines.

The concept is good but I think that 1/4" diameter it a bit too large for your boat. Bare wire is the way to go. Maybe it's just a personal preference but 3/16" would be more than adequate. I like using Hayn Hi Mod compression fittings. They make it easy to assemble your own lifelines because you can fit them exactly as necessary. You can also replace a lifeline and re-use the fittings.

Do yourself a favor and contact Seco South for NEW lifelines. You may be suprised that new stuff is not that expensive and they can put on any type of fittings for you at a very reasonable price.

Yeah, it's larger than he needs or would want pay $$$ to buy if he had to buy new, but come on, guys... he already has the free 1/4, so why spend money he doesn't have to? Go with the 1/4 if you can get all the fittings you need. Larger is always beeter.

i agree with Steve on this ...i had them make all my standing rigging on my boat....Ken did an autopsy on my old stuff and then made it all new again....i don't think you can beat there prices or service.....
