Jim- Learn how to say "NO" if you want to have time for sailing. Between my church and family "You're retired so you have time to...whatever..." I stay a lot busier than I want to be much of the time. Cramps my sailing time. Enjoy yourself. Saw a cartoon a while back that I wish I had saved. Two retired men are sitting on a bench. One says " My wife asked me this morning what I was going to do today, and I told her 'Nothing!' She said 'That's what you did yesterday.' I told her I didn't finish yesterday." -Paul

I am eligable to retire now, just working for an extra scoop of gravy on my pension plan. I turn 56 next week and have just over 32 years service. By next June I'll have 33 years. My age and years service must be 85 or higher and I qualified 11 months ago. I might retire next summer or for sure the following summer (2011), doubt I'll go the full 35 years as I am getting pretty antsi now. Nice to be able to say I am working by choice as opposed to being captive. I just need to work a bit longer to finish outfitting my boat. Will it ever be finished?

When I was a young apprentice, I used to work with an older carpenter who would tell me, "John, all I want out of life is two fully-paid, six-month vacations per year."

Now, I actually have that! The working part of my life was great in lots of ways, but so is retirement.

I am concerned that so many people believe that it is ok to work for 35 or 40 years and then be non-productive for the next 30 years. That is such a waste of experience and intellectual resources. Just when a person reaches the prime of their intellictual and skill levels they leave the work force and go out to play .

I have enough time for the people who need some handyman work done by someone they can depend on showing up- and trust. Other than that, I proof read the World Book Encyclopedia for the publishers.:Liar:

Who's making the rules? If you want to work and find fulfillment doing so, then more power to you. I'm not a puritanical Yankee, so I'm retired at 50 and farting around. (I actually work about one day a week for pin money) No apologies here.

My brother 8 years my senior said that he envied my purpose for getting up for a good purpose each morning. Yes, I have a puritanical work ethic. I have watched many friends retire young and die young because they have no purpose and no plan for post retirement living. People that retire before they are 60 years old have time for another career in a field that they are passionate about. Get a degree in marine biology and make a difference. Try some courses in ecological impact studies. Do something that will leave your mark on a better world.

Ross god bless you in your beliefs but some people really deserve to retire and have fun and enjoy their life after working hard and raising a family and sending them to schools or what ever was needed.
I could not wait for me and wife to retire and do all the fun stuff,our jobs did not give all that much free time and now we do have the time to be active and that is the important part to be active in your retirement,plus the young people need our jobs so make room for the future workers.

I am trying to prepare for retirement by not ever having a job. I don't want to work for 40 years, retire, then my body goes into work withdrawls and dies!

Nick , This week I am working at a local farm and 5 Amish men are building an equipment barn. About 60 feet wide by about 130 feet long. The five man crew including the senior man on the job and team leader who writes the invoice, charge 15 dollars per hour per man. They work like slaves and are cheerful and skilled. The senior man is my age and as vigorous as most 45 year old men.

Tell me again how hard you have worked and how you have a right to rest on you past.
