Life-Caulk Hmmmm Moment

For the first time I really began to ponder what is written on my Life Caulk tube. It says it can be used underwater. Hmmm, (I said to myself) - how could this be? It must not have anything to do with lack of oxygen or it would cure in the tube. Does this mean I could I rebed my winches in the rain if I wanted to??? Can someone with a knowledge of the chemistry of this stuff fill me in and tell me how this is possible?

Most polyurethanes

Most polyurethane products such as 4200, 5200, Sika 291 and others are "moisture" cure. Meaning they need exposure to humidity to cure. It's rated for use on under water fittings, after it's sufficiently cured, but DON'T apply it under water...

I take it to mean you can use it underwater and it won't fall apart. Kind of like paint. Some are for topsides only.

I'm not a chemist, but here's a guess: I think the stuff can be used for below the water line applications, not actually applied under water. That is, haul your boat, caulk whatever you need/want to beneath the wateline, then relaunch.I, for one, would never recommend rebedding winches in the rain, as the rain dilutes your beer. Randy

Read a little farther and you may find

that the application calls for clean dry free of dust, oil, water, release agents and on and on. Read the entire label before you start. Sometimes do-it-yourselfers get into real trouble because they read the first three paragraphs in the instructions and guess the rest.

Life Caulk

For any sealant to work properly, the surfaces to which it is being applied must be clean and dry. Otherwise the sealant won't adhere properly and it will soon pull away and break the seal. It has also been my experience that Life Caulk will set up in the unopened tube if you let it sit there long enough. Please don't ask how I know this....PeterH23 "Raven"
