Looking to take a 10 day cruise out of Clinton CT. Any suggetions ideas, places to visit? How far should we plan on being able to go?

Eric, a couple of years ago there was an article in Cruising World about cruising the Sound. It was a great article. If you want I can make a copy and either fax it or send it to you. Wher you can go is going to depend partly on what size boat you have. LI Sound Cruise
I had my first boat at Pilots Point Marina right next to Clinton. In a ten day cruise you can go pretty far. My suggestion is the first day cruise to west end harbor on fishers island and anchor for the night. The next day up the mystic river and visit Mystic seaport. The next day go to napatree point and anchor overnight. Go to the beach one of the best in the world. The next day relax. The next day cruise out to Block Island and stay for 2 days. Then go to Sag harbor on the eigth day. On the ninth day go to greenport or stay in sag harbor, or go to three mile harbor right next door. On the tenth day return home. Make sure you allow for a flexible schedule due to weather, you may want to plan on returning on the ninth day and on the tenth clean up the boat and repair all the stuff you broke from sailing so hard. have a good cruise. Another option is go to Newport with a stop at Point Judith. You can go as far as Nantucket in the time frame you mention easily.

Go East my boy, go East
Although LIS is a great cruising area, winds tend to be light in the summer months and also predominately from the SW. Which means going West you will be motoring quite frequently if you want to get anywhere! Once out of the Sound, the water is cleaner, and the breezes fresher. As the other folks mentioned, Block Island is great, Shelter Island, Newport, Cuttyhunk, the Vineyard. You can't go wrong with any of these places. But,if you are planning on dock space at some of the more popular spots like Newport and the Vineyard, call early for reservations. They sometimes are booked early in the season. Also, get yourself a good cruising guide...I use Embassy guides and really like them. They have several, so make sure you get the one that covers the area you will be cruising. "So many places to go, and so little time". COME ON SPRING

Dave, As I was reading your reply my mouth started watering. Ah... Napatree point, one of my favorite places in the world. Especially if you can hit it mid-week. Do you keep your boat in Mystic? We keep ours at Brewers in Mystic.

Chris I keep the boat at Spicer's. I feel we take for granted all the local places having got used to them for so long. But when my boat was at Pilots point in the mid '80s in Westbrook this area was a destination for my summer vacations. Napatree point was a long days sail for me on my 25 Catalina and I'd stay 3 or 4 days and not get sick of it with young kids on the beach. Now that that is just an hour and a half away I always head for other destinations on vacations, but I find their not necessarily better! On a weeks vacation I'll often go to Nantuckett with stops at Cuttyhunk, the Vineyard (Edgartown) and Newport on the way there and back. I've always wanted to cut thru the canal and get out to Provincetown but never seem to have the time. I figure three days each way travelling so a week gets eaten up pretty quick allowing for days of poor weather = fog in our area. What do you sail out of brewers (what boat)? Look for a C&C 40 docked just past the railroad bridge and named "Chablis" a good friend bought her last year and I went sailing a few times on it...really awesome boat. Was raced a lot and is really well equipped. Give them a wave, they can always use crew on a boat that size. My current boat is Windward Jan, an O'Day 35 so look for me on the water. Drop the anchor at Mattituck. Orient by the Sea Marina in the North Fork. Greenport (Townsend Marina) -- great town. Sag Harbor. Coecles HJarbor in Shelter Island. You'll love it.

In addition to the places that Mike recomended, you may want to try these also...Thimble Islands in Branford are very pretty. Milford Landing in Milford is very nice and a short walk to town and restaurants. Captains Cove in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport is very nice also. Norwalk harbor (where I keep my boat is also nice)They have a free town dock where you can tie up for a couple of hours. Also lots of islands you can anchor out. OK, that's some places on the Connecticut shore, now New York..Northport is a nice little town with shopping and restaurants, In Oyster bay there is Lloyds Neck (the sand hole)it's very nice there, but local knowledge helps getting in there. First time in I would follow someone. Also in Oyster Bay is Cold Spring Harbor. Port Washington would be another spot I would try. Any questions email me. Have a good time.

Long Island Sound cruise
There are so many places on the sound to visit just some thought about Mystic area. There is the Mystic Seaport (you can dock overnight or just for the day, Call ahead) The sub base on the Thames is interesting to see.The Connecticut River has lots to offer also. Stonington and Watch Hill are very nice to visit or overnight. Hope you have a great trip!

I wouldn't make more than a night of it, but I'd definitely stop in Port Jefferson. Very nice harbor, and the town opens up from the docks outward. Really neat. Good seafood, lots of colorful bars. I haunted mainstreet quite a bit during my undergraduate years. Good Luck, and I am envious. Rob
