If you had a week going east to west, what are the "must stops" on L.I. sound? Also, is there a definitive cruising guide I should buy?

Long Island Sound

Tim, If I were puting a list together Mystic River and Mystic Seaport would have to be on it as must see (have docking facilities check there web site) Other area that come to mind are Stonington Harbor area, Napa Tree,Watch Hill and Fishers Island area. The Thimble Island are also a great stopping area.Realy not enough time do do all this in a week ! I sure others will add some great idea as Long Island Sound has lots to offer ! Enjoy the trip !

Try these....

On Long Island - Matt-a-mar Marina in Mattituck - pool, restaurant, nice and quiet. Mattituck inlet can get shallow - check the charts. Port Jefferson harbor - the town dock is pricey at $3/foot and noisy. Try Danford's Marina - much nicer. Northport harbor - town dock is $2/foot - small, old-time harbor town. Town park right there at the dock, free concerts in the summer by the community band. Huntington harbor - several marinas offer transient moorings. Short cab or bike ride to Main Street. The last three above all have lots of shops, places to eat, and things to do. On the CT side, try Norwalk Cove Marina. Also $2/foot for a slip. 2 restaurants, a salt water pool, and a small beach on premises. Town park, miniature golf right outside the gate. Moderate walk or short cab ride to town, with everything from walk-up crab shacks to trendy cafes on the main drag in town (Washington Street, I think). Try the Brewhouse Restaurant, near the Maritime Aquarium. Good food, reasonably priced family restaurant.

In Norwalk you could just go to the town dock

No electricity, but within a very short walk to the town with great restaraunts and bars and also the Aquarium (Washington St). I think the town dock is about $1 foot for overnight. Beware the town dock can be busy during a nice weekend during the day. Just come back later. Port Jeff is nice town with a well protected harbor. Forget the docks in town (Danfords), you can easily anchor out or use the Setauket Yacht Club moorings for about $1 with continual launches http://www.syc1.com/aboutsyc.htm. Essex is kind of nice up the connecticut river. with a few marina's around Got to go to Griswald Inn for Dinner if you do. Of course Mystic is great and the others mentioned
