Id like to make some quick trips in the sound and would like to know approximate distances to different places..From little neck bay all the way west in the sound working my way east...these are my guesses
little neck bay to manhasset harbor-1hr
manhasset harbor to hempstead harbor-1hr
hempstead harbor to oyster bay-2hr
oyster bay to huntington harbor-1.5 hrs
huntington harbor to port jefferson-3-4 hrs
port jeff to mount sinaii-1 hr

so how off am I?? There are no harbors between huntington and port jeff???
did I miss any harbors ???

You can't measure distance in hours. Boat speed over bottom is dependent on wind speed and direction and the strength and direction of currents. A distance of 5 NM may take you an hour or less under favorable conditions or it could take you 6+ hours unless less favorable ones. The Long Island Sound has strong tidal currents which must be taken into account. Get a chart to measure your distances and a tide and currents table to guide you as far as timing your trip.

Google Earth, whilst no substitute for proper charts, is free, can be downloaded forthwith and has great tools for measuring out distances and getting co-ordinates. It is also a good companion to charts, even once you have them.
