Hi, we have a Hunter 49 and the electric lewmar windlass has just started to slip when coming up or going down. When retrieving anchor, the winch turns approx. 3/4 of a revolution and continues to make noise, however, no longer rotates. I can "assist" the winch with the handle every turn and it comes up. Same thing for dropping anchor. The windlass itself tripped the breaker prior to this occurring. The windlass was working very hard to retrieve well set anchor. Since, however, it is now slipping. Any suggestions as we don't have the original manual. I have tried tightening on top of the winch where the handle goes in and I am only able to get about a half inch turn that does not seem to make any difference.

The good news is the windlass is one of the easiest things tO fix once you identify the cause of the problem which, in this case, sounds like a stripped gear. Have you pulled it apart to inspect yet?

Hi, thanks for this-no we haven't stripped it down as yet-it just happened when we were starting our days travels and we will have a better look at it tomorrow. Incidentally, I had just changed from our Lewmar anchor 44lb to our Fortress FX 37 in case this may have something to do with it? We just found that the FX 37 was holding better lately so we changed it to our primary anchor. Unsure if the weight difference has any bearing on this?

Ok Im assuming that your windless is factory standard from Hunter. By that I mean its the same as the one I have on my Hunter 49 which is a Lewmar V2/V3. Go to the Lewmar site and you can download the manual plus lots of FAQ's as well that might help. Dave

Thanks for that Brezzin, it may be a lot clearer to me when I read the manual. Thanks for the info.
