Lewmar V1 Windlass

I recently installed a V1 windlass and for the most part am happy with it. What I do find irritating is the clutch which seems to constantly require tightening. Every time I raise the anchor the clutch slips loose just as the anchor reaches the deck and, if I am not quick to manually stop it, re - drops the anchor. Is there any way to disable the slip clutch? I realize that this is part of the free fall feature but I don’t use free fall and find the clutch letting go very anoying.

Thanks
Tim

Go to there web site Lewmar.com, they have a pretty good support team. I had/have a E-store and sold quite a few Lewmar products. I found there support to be very helpful.

Hey Tim,

With the windlass being brand new, I would start disassembling it in place to see what is not holding. It's pretty simple construction. Never had that problem with mine and can't even make a wild guess as to what's going on. PM me some pics as you disassemble and maybe with four eyes (or is it eight eyes ?) we can pick it out.

My guess is the friction surfaces need to be broken in, like bedding in brakes after replacement. I would try to tighten the clutch as much as I could, then release and re-tighten. If nothing else works, I would try roughing up the friction surfaces with some coarse sandpaper.

I left a message for Lewmar support but haven’t heard back. I will try disassembling and see where that gets me.
