I have a Hunter 30 (1990) with Lewmar portholes. I am interested in getting new screens for my portholes and they measures 10 1/2 X 4 1/8 (approx). They are rectangular with curved corners. Where can I get replacements? I would also like to know if the same size PORTHOLE is available from Lewmar, to replace those originally installed by HUNTER. Any chance someone could call us at 925-634-3533. Bob Harrison of Fortune Hunter

re-screen it yourself

1. Purchase new screen at any hardware store. 2. Take screen trim ring out of the port, and take home. Remove old screen, clean with acetone. 3. Lay screen trim ring on wood board. 4. Roll out screen over board, pull tight and staple to board. This will take two persons, three, if one is your spouse. 5. Apply airplane plastic glue to the screen, following the trim ring. 6. After glue is dry, scribe with razor, and take back to the boat. Install in reverse order. Little bit of time, under $10.00 Try it, what have you got to lose? Good luck Ian

THANKS

Ian, Your email reply was very much appreciated. My wife cracked up when she read the part about her helping me - TRUE!! BUT the frames for my screens are warped, so I need new frames too. What other ideas do you have for me - can't find them! Thanks so much Bob Harrison

I think you are stuck

Bob I think you are stuck. You might want to try placing your warped screens on a piece of plexiglass of the same thicknes, scribe and cut but that seems like to much work. You could try placing the screens beteen two boards, clamping down, and then baking but I am not sure this would change the plastic memory, and you may melt them if the tempurature got to hot. I think it is time for new ports. I reported my 79 Hunter 30' two years ago. I found a lot of rot under several of the ports. I filled one with so much expoxy that when it kicked, it started smoking, I though I set my boat on fire. Good luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

frames and stuff

captainhappy, I have a thought and a suggestion but can't pin it down. So...I will throw it it for others to give input. Yes, like Ian said go buy some fiberglass screen at Lowes/Home Depot. For the frame ...Home Depot sells a fiberglass panel that is about 1/8" thick. Trace the old frame on this. It would make a great new frame. Cut two pieces and laminate it over the screen on each side. Add a half to a dozen screws and nylon aircraft type nuts (Stainless) to hold it all together nice job and completed.(Screen is now replacable ) Problem.... The fiberglass panel is 4'x8' and 25-30 bucks. Problem is finding a smaller piece of this type of fiberglass panel. r.w.landau

Missing screens also

I need to replace a screen in one of my starboard port holes in my Catalina 30'. The remaining screens are warped and will probably blow out also. Where can one obtain new screens? I am interested in making new ones myself and the suggestions I have been reading here, are good.

Try John at Florida Rigging and Hydraulics

"johnb@rigginghydraulics.com" He was extremely helpful when I was looking for repair kits for my Lewmar portlights. You can also get info from the Lewmar website but it is easier to use John.
