John H380 1999

I have the Lewmar smaller opening ports on our 1999 Hunter 380 and they drip through the gasket when it rains. Not a lot, but annoying. And they do seem to clamp shut pretty good with the dogs latch down. I do not mean the large hatches on the topsides. I tried wiping the rubber gaskets down with Armorall and cleaning them but that didn't help. They pick up dust and dirt from the environment. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - John

stopping small leaks

I have Bomar ports, but I think this will help any port. I put vaseline on the rubber seal and it stopped my leaks. I was about to replace a couple of them because of the leaks, and someone suggested trying vaseline on the seals before doing anything else. That was close to a year ago and they still aren't leaking despite being opened and closed a lot.

Portlights

I had the same problem on my portlights.. I wound up replacing the gaskets at $5.50 a piece and haven't had a water leak since... I wound up replaceing eve the ones that don't leak.. Good luck..

My two cents...

I had the same problem but sounds like my leaks were worse. I would caution about using Amorall (sp) and even petroleum jelly - both can over time degrade the rubber I think. I'd suggest using the silicon jelly used on pool and scuba rubber gaskets. Mine has been fine after well over a year now. Fair winds.

Are you sure ....

..the leaks are from the gasket, John ? The leak could be from around the edge of the port itself, and simply appear to be from the gasket. Pull the plastic trim off and you will have better access to the bottom of the port. Stick a paper towel under the metal part between the metal and the hull. If wet, the leak is probably not the gasket seal. Also, look to see if Hunter put ALL of the screws around the outside of the ports. They are notorious for leaving some, or many of them out. There should be 12 screws per port if I remember correctly. if screws are missing, new screws should help. Good luck......... Jeff
