I needed to replace the forward hatch on my H22. I looked around and found that the Lewmar Ocean Hatch 40 flat base was the best fit. I am attempting to attach a picture of the finished product.

Thanks

Thanks Bob, I may have to replace mine this year depending on how my re-chaulk job did last summer. I was unsure of what to use

Looks Great

After seeing your new hatch I am thinking that might be a future project for my H22. My front hatch works but the frame on it is getting old. It is hard to fasten the hatch closed. It works for now....but I appreciate the information.....Btw, if you don't mind me asking....How much does the hatch run?

I bought it from Sailnet during a sale... it cost a little less than $400. The original hatch was made by Gray Industries which was bought by Bomar. I could not find a Bomar hatch that fit the opening correctly. The Lewmar hatch is an excellent fit. This is a much higher quality hatch than the original hatch. The new hatch can be locked in a vent position (slightly open to allow ventilation without water infiltration. If the new hatch is unlocked it can be unlatched and opened from on deck. The hard part was cleaning the surface after the old hatch was removed. The old screw holes do not line-up with the new hatch flange. I drilled new screw holes. The old holes were covered with the bedding compound. The original hatch had silicone for bedding compound. I used 3M 4000UV for the bedding compound.

Original vs Lewmar

Just wondering what the cut-out size is for the hatch you added. I have found @www.pompanette.com several with a cut-out size in the 16" range that seems suitable for replacement. Your thoughts. Thanks new owner of '81 that needs TLC. SYoung

Lewmar vs. Pompanette (Bomar)

The cutout for the Lewmar 40 is 16 9/16 x 16 9/16. The cutout is not the only consideration. You also need to consider do you want a flat base or a flange base. Lewmar makes this model in a flange base and a flat base. The original was a flat base. I could not find one with a flat base, with correct deminsions, built by Pompanette. I did not want to reduce the actual opening by introducing the flange base through the opening. I did not want to expand the opening. My concern on expanding the opening was the effect of disturbing the joint of the v-birth ceiling and the deck. So I went with the Lewmar because it was the only flat base hatch I could find with the correct cutout size.
