Lewmar Electric Winch on Sabre 425

I want to have the option of installing an electric cabin top winch on a Sabre 425?

It looks like the best place is on the port side in the aft cabin roof. There is a 110v electric run there already for a cabin light and the headroom under the winch motor is still reasonable. I will likely need to upgrade the gauge of the wire.

Installing the motor in the starboard side aft head is the other option but may get in the way more and take up valuable head room while showering?

I am interested in any advice, pitfalls or successes.

No. But I would use the winch mainly for the main halyard. Only occasionally would I use the electric winch for the main sheet.
Do you know, is their space I'm the aft cabin?

I am pretty sure they are 12 or 24 volt DC sure have never seen a high voltage sailboat unit

The motor sits under the base of the winch inside the boat and is not tiny

You should be speaking to a local marine mechanic about this upgrade or call Sabre to see what they think.

And I doubt the winch or the cabin lights run on 110. You could get into real trouble trying to DIY if you do not understand some basic electrical principles.

This is preliminary query to see if an actual Sabre 425 owner has done this modification and how it fits. I have no intention of tackling this myself -- just want to see if it is feasible. I don't have possession of the boat yet so I can't bring the mechanic around to look at it.

And yes, I contacted Sabre via email but they have not gotten back to me yet.

An electric winch is going to operate on low voltage DC current, not HV AC. The good news is that Lewmar's Ocean and Evo winches can be converted to electric with a kit. A big lump in the cabin ceiling however.

Anything is possible but you may want to try it the way it is first or consider a batt car system to make raising and lowering the sail more effortless.

At a minimum it would require a good ships carpenter, a marine electrician, perhaps an upholstery guy and possibly a fiberglass guy. It may also require new winches.. If I had to guess this may be a 4-8k upgrade by the time all is said and done.You will have some custom woodwork that may make the aft cabin or head look funny or it may dig into head room.
