I've got a 1996 Hunter 23.5. Love the boat. Got a question regarding the Lewmar 6 winch that I think came standard on these boats. The starboard winch spins freely and has no slop when I wiggle it back and forth. The port side winch has quite a bit of play in it and if the blow-ups of these winches are correct there are roller bearings on the main shaft that could be the culprit.

First, is this true? if so, are these bearings able to be purchased as replacement parts or part of a winch rebuild kit? Replacing the winches is my last choice, as the existing hardware has held up well - including the water tight seals to the cabin and I'd rather not risk a leak by not replacing the winches correctly.

Ideas or recommendations are always worth a Dark and Stormy!

Thanks.

Pretty basic little wench I would start off by taking it apart and seeing where the slop is, and go from there.

Lewmar's web sight has videos on servicing and how to put them back to gather, under the service tab.

Clarification to the replies

This forum has the servicing instructions and pictures..

under "boat Info" and "Downloads, General Info"

EDIT: Post pictures of what ya find.. I would suspect a part left out or a loose center post.. ??
I guess the original post wasn't clear. The winch has drum bearings located on the main shaft. These are shot on the port winch and I'm looking for replacements. This is a Lewmar 6 winch. Does anyone know where these parts can be purchased?

Thanks.

a suggestion from the peanut gallery

This being the internet, where you often get answers to questions that you did not really ask... here goes.
:)
I would also advise you to consider this a Sign from Posidon that you should upgrade to some small self tailing winches.

We sailed a 20 foot sailboat for years and then a 26 footer for a decade, and then bought our current boat that came with ST winches. If I had known how much easier they would make single handing I would changed over in a heartbeat on those prior boats!

Based on the parts information from lewmar (page 6 of this PDF http://www.lewmar.com/assets/img/dataset/Manual-Winch Part Manual - Volume 10.pdf) it looks like the lewmar 6 and 7 don't use drum bearings? Could you have a lewmar 8 which has the bearings listed as part 7 on the diagram lower down on the same page? If it is a 6 and has the bearings that's good to know as I have to service mine this year! (Perhaps they are not considered a user serviceable part and included only as part of the drum on th 6&7- might be worth a call to lewmar?)

Let us know what you find

Take the worn bearing to a bearing supply house and have them match it up to a new bearing. It will be a lot less expensive than dealing with a boat supply house.
