I brought home my set of Lewmar 40 2 speed winches. They need a new finish on them. They were originally chromed so that would be nice to have them done again. I took one apart and there seems to be a steel sleeve inside the broznze winch body that the large needle bearings ride on. Does this need to be taken out before re-chroming? If so how?
Is the winch body bronze?
What other coatings are you guys putting on old winches?

I doubt the shaft has to be removed for a rechrome. I would check with the hot rod or classic car guys locally to get references to a chrome place that does decent work Good luck!

I had a few pieces chromed for a prototype I build a few years back. A guy quoted me $75 a winch. I don't think they ever did any winches the way he was talking. I don't know exactly what I want them to do. I don't know what was originally on the winches. I wanted to know what I wanted them to do before I took it to them since they don't seem to have done any before. I guess anything is better than what they look like now. I just want it to last. I have read other threads on other sites but they never seemed to come to a conclusion as to showroom chrome or industrial chrome being better or which of these was originally on lewmars.
