I own a 27.5 built in 1983. She still has the original Lewmar 16 winches. I need to service/clean/lube both of them now. Does anyone have instructions or can recomend web site on how to take down to do PM. Thanks, Lee Henderson S/V El Sueno

Lewmar service.

Lee, you shouldn't need a manual. The Lewmar winches of this vintage were designed to be field-stripped with a pocket knife. The pawls come out by hand-- they don't even come flying out at you (or over the side) like Barient's would. The 'circlips' are flat and lie right under the edge of the ring round the handle hole-- they may in fact be so thin you can barely see where to slide the blade of your knife. But they will pop out easily and go back in with no problem. These winches pretty much put Barient and others out of business for their quality and simplicty of service. There is a now-'famous' story about the new NY-area Lewmar rep, Steve Collins, driving his new VW Rabbit into the Cherubini shop in on a rainy July afternoon in 1977 and demonstrating to a rapt shop crew just how easy these things were to take apart. The guy thought he'd be getting an order for 6 boats' worth a year; because he'd met my dad that day he also ended up getting the whole Hunter account as well (at whose discount rate I bought for the 6 boats a year as well!). Needless to say Steve Collins was a pretty loyal vendor for many years. [wink] JC 2
