I just bought a 1984 Catalina 25 with the self tailing Lewmar 16 winches. I did not receive a manual for them and can't figure out how to take them apart for service. I looked at the Lewmar website but the information in the online manual doesn't seem to apply to my winches. It says to remove the circular cover but mine doesn't have this cover. My feeding arm is cast with the top as one piece and I can't see any circlips that are accessable. I'm sure there is a simple solution and I'll feel silly when I hear it but for now I am left scratching my head. Any help is appreciated. Andrew

You should be able to unscrew

the four screws holding the arm off the top and go from there. Either take pictures or make sketches, and you always have the other winch to use as a model to put it back together. You could also go into a bookstore or chandlery and look at Calder's Boatowner's Manual, since he has good diagrams. Most of us have had your quandry - get started and don't worry, it's easier than you think.

Hi Stu, I don't have four screws to take off. At least not that I can see. My winches don't have any visible fasteners of any kind. I'm sure that once I figure out how to open this thing it will be very simple to service and reassemble but I just don't see how to get started. I thought about removing the whole thing from the boat but I'm sure that I don't need to and it probably won't help me get the drum off anyway. Thanks for the thought. Any other ideas? Andrew
