I just purchased a set of Lewmar 14 st winches for our boat. It said that they can be used with 1/4" to 3/8" line. These will be used for jib sheets, and I can use either 5/16" or 3/8" line for them. Is it better to use alittle smaller line than the max the winch will take, or does it not matter? I would like to use the 3/8" if possible, as the larger size line will be easier for my wife to handle. Thanks Dale

Max is max

Max is the designed maximum. The winch will most likely handle 7/16" line with only a little balking. I'd go with 3/8" line is that is what is needed for safe handling.

Max is Self Tailer's capacity

I believe that the max rating you are talking about is relative to the self tailer's capacity, not the winch drum. If it says it handles line to 3/8 and you want to use 3/8 line - then by all means do it! I agree that the larger diameter line will feel better in your hands, and using that size should be no problem for your new winches. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Jaws....

The line size rating is for cleating effectiveness of the ST ring's jaws. Cleat size, in otherwords. So... I think you should get your wife the 3/8 fuzzy soft reggata braid sheet so she will enjoy working the boat with you.
