All,

I have a questions about sailing on Lewisville Lake in Dallas. We have a Beneteau First 36.7 (7.2 draft) on the lake for the winter. I have heard conflicting reports about the frequency and location of the trees that were not chopped down before the lake was flooded, and now exist just below the waters surface, even in 50 of water.

The Navionics Gold chart show 'stumps' marked on the map as shown below, but I have also heard that the area shown outlined in red on the second map is a no-go zone as well. I would really like to hear comment s and experiences on what is prudent and what is not.

I have heard this area shown below is all bad. True? Others? Please feel free to download the image, mark it, and report to the thread. Or email it to me at clay DOT babcock AT gmail DOT com

I'll report back any feedback I get to the post. Thanks

DancingDays drafts just under 6 ft. I regularly sail a direct course between the pier 121 cut and the northern Lake Dallas Dam cut. I once bumped something in the vicinity of the SE tree warning, but it was a soft blow and did no damage according to the diver that cleaned my hull about a month later.

Keep in mind that this area doesn't tend to have tall trees, so in deep water anything near the surface is likely to be small.

Use caution in any area marked as flooded timber. I've had some near misses on large exposed trunks up in the center finger beyond the area you show. There's a line of 3 exposed telephone poles running NS south of the lake Dallas cut. They are easily seen in daylight, and should show on your chart if you zoom in further. There's a shallow hump north of the new toll bridge center span, just a bit west of due north that might be a problem for your draft. Again, it should show on your chart.

Be careful of the point at the NE end of the pier 121 cut. Avoid the courtesy slips at Sneaky Petes and at Lakeview marina, as they are rumored to have submerged infrastructure crossing the slips.

I also have the navionics gold chart in my chart plotter, and have found the Lewisville Lake chart to be of high quality both in resolution and accuracy.

DD,
thanks for the response and the advice. It seem that the majority of the trees follow the old creek bottoms, which are shown on the Navionics charts. Whould you agree?

You are right about the NG charting. Their US freshwater charts are really designed for fishing, and so accurate bottom/feature coverage is important. Usually not so much for sailors, but in this case yes!
