why does the engagement lever on my 4000 plus auto helm wheel pop out of gear ? right now I use a small bungie chord to keep it down, but that is a pain

more than one possibility

1) the belt has stretched and needs to be replaced 2) one of the pins tat act laike a cotter key has sheered off allowing the either the engagement lever or teh internal cam to slip on the shaft. In either case it won't lock in to position correctly. You need to fix this soon! The next likely malfunction will be that the cam slips all the way around and then the pilot will not disengage without disassembly of the unit. This isn't real difficult but it is awfully hard to steer the boat until you get it unbolted from the wheel - do you know where your metric allen wrenches are? Don, I had dthe same problem this summer. It finally got so bad that the lever wouldn't stay down at all. I contacted Emerald City Marine Electronics in Seattle and he immediately knew what the problem was. It is a very small cam roller that puts the tension on the belt that was worn to the point that tension could not be applied. Actually, It atttaches to the lever itself. It is very easy to install yourself. Takes about 15 minutes to install and cost $40.
