One foggy morning in the gulf of mexico was enough to convince me of the need for a Radar in the nav. Especially when we anchored only 75 feet from shore without even realizing we were that close until dawn. I am considering the "Radar on the Level" advertized in the Hunter store. Anyone have any comments or concerns on rigging the mount from a split backstay on a fractional rig? I will consult my rigger but you guys(in this web site) are the true experts. Thanks Rob s/v You Be U p.s. I vote for the Legend 35.5 to be one of the most exceptional boats on the market.

fog stuff.

I spend a lot of time in the fog, and I spend a lot of time with the rail down, but I rarely have the rail down when it's foggy. For that reason I went ahead and bolted the radome to the mast without any sort of gimbal. No regrets.

Backstay Mount Concerns

Mounting the radar with the backstay as a support raises a concern for me. When off the wind, for optimum performance, the backstay tension is loosened. Maybe a cruiser wouldn't do this but a loose backstay would be much more prone to fatigue failure with the extra load of a radar. The same is true of the forstay as this should be kept tensioned when not in use. A H-43 returning from Australia to Hawaii lost it's mast due to fatigue failure of the forstay because he didn't use the jib and consequently the forstay went back and forth a lot. He said the boat went fast enough with out the jib! With regard to the 35.5 being a good boat I'd have to agree. It's a fast boat, good layout, priced reasonable, and has a separate shower stall.

Flop & wabble

I was just checking that one out myself, I don't see how it can work at all well with a fractional rig, way to much play in the backstay (even with the adjuster set). I think you'd need the optional poll the runs up one side of the back stay as shown at their web site. My radar is mounted on the Edson stern poll and works just fine. I'm never sailing in the fog, usably there is no wind and to many things to go wrong. I also use the poll to mount other antennas as well, it's a good alternative.
