Can I change my recommendation ? After looking into the fishfinders on the other thread and maybe needing one ourselves as ours might be dieing I really like the EAGLE CUDA 350 S/MAP WITH TRANSDUCER. It is a sonar/GPS chartplotter combo with built-in mapping....

....for under $200 it gives you GPS position, waypoints and routing capabilities, depth, speed, bottom detail, fish detail, outputs GPS position to a DSC VHF radio and gives you water temp (if you don't mount the transducer inside the hull.

It isn't comparable to say a Garmin 400/500 series chartplotter, but offers a lot for the money and is probably all that most of us guys with a little boat with shallow draft needs along with some paper charts.

Here is a link to the manual (takes some time to download as it is 180 pages).....

and factory link....

....buy one of these and save the rest of the money until you know what else you really need, I think we will and use it in addition to the computer/chartplotter I'm building. The 350 will connect to a NEMA 183 device and will for sure output you position to say a DSC VHF radio and the manual says it will also input, but it is unclear if you could input waypoints to the unit from say SeaClear II or Open CPN. I'm going to call on Monday or Tuesday and see if I can find that out. If so we wouldn't have to use the handheld Map 76 in the cockpit after dumping waypoints into it from SeaClear :).
