bow eye fix

I don't know if this is a mod but I know alot of guys have trouble with the bow eye coming loose and letting water in. The problem is the wood block that they use at the factory for backing rots out and lets eye come lose. The hardest part is reaching the nuts and replacing the backing, so I cut a hole in the interior wall to reach the work. Here are the pictures of the steps that I did.

I used a SS tang and straightened it out to use for backing. I applied some 5200 and reinstalled the eye. After I finished I added a 5" access cap. Now I can tighten down the winch on the trailer without the fear of pulling the eye out. P.S. Use a metal bit in a recip saw to cut the hole. I had to use a sawsall to finish the last 3 inches because I couldn't turn the recip saw without hitting the sides.

(26C) - The under the sink area has the batteries, tools, spare parts, ect and I wanted a place to keep manuals, maybe the volt meter, ect.. The "box" is held onto the plastic door with four screws..

Nik, I really like your battery compartment work! What product did you use to finsih the inside, is that an epoxy paint?

Doug- Don't have any pics... sorry. My setup is very similar to yours except that in the cockpit drain line I have a flexible section just after it turns parallel to the hull. I came off the motor well drain with an elbow, then had a flexible section going to a Tee at the throughhull. Both drains run downhill to the tee, no traps or anything. I also put in a Tee on the cockpit drain where it crosses the bulkhead, so I can add a bilge pump at some later time.

I posted this on the trailersailor site and got a flurry of interesting responses.

So I'll post it here as well in case some of you only frequent this board.

One of my favorite things about this forum is seeing the mods many of you have done or are in the process of doing to your boats. The ingenuity out there is amazing! I'm pretty sure we all enjoy seeing what others have done. It stimulates new ideas. We can then attempt to replicate the mod with our own boats. To me a big part of the fun is always improving my boat.

Would any of you care to post pics and descriptions of a mod you are particularly proud of?

Have you done a mod that is rather unique, one you haven't seen anyone else do yet?

Structural improvements, rigging enhancements, etc., etc...

Please share your ideas! Even if you posted it in the past, there are new members on the board that may not have seen it yet.

I'll start with one.

Laz Floor:

My floor at this point is functional, but I made it out of scrape wood. Now that I have it made I can copy it with good hardwood, and will seal it with something like Cetol Marine. I'll also make it look much nicer, maybe a slated design. The floor is almost level, and is not fastened down, it just sits in the bottom of the laz, easily removable for maintenance or whatever. As you can see in the pics there is room under it for my bilge pump and my shoot thru the hull transducer. The supports underneath fore and aft fit the contour of the hull, distributing weight, there is no concentrated pressure point.
Also in the pictures you can see the cockpit and motor well drainage system, I re-did with PVC, which hugs the sides allowing better storage access.

This what I did to replace the motor mount. I used two pieces of white oak epoxied them with the grain going in different directions. Check out the weather!

If you can see the hatch cover, it is made out of 1/4 inch plexi. I got it from my local glass shop. It may even be something differnt than plexi, but it is smoke in color. I gave him my dimensions and he cut it for me. Total-15.00 bucks. He even beveled the edges for me. The pain was getting the sticky paper off of it. It took for ever. Mac

I wish I could take credit for all of these, but the PO was really thorough and knew what he was doing. The switch panel is the best, with all circuits fused and the switches lit. In the area above the sink, where the flotation was, there are mounted lugs for branching each circuit.

We added the mast rest on the stern rail for convenience with bridges, since one of our favorite restaurants is just past a non-opening bridge.

The third is the pressure water system. There is a 14 gallon rigid plastic tank under the forward berth, in a holder glassed to the floor. The pump switch is in the faucet handle, while the pump is mounted to the side of the hull in the starboard bilge.

Makes one appreciate the boat all the more.

JDK Do you leave the wind vail on while trailoring? I thought it was bad or would come off @ 55-60 mph.

I do leave it on, but I tie it with a short piece of line so that it doesn't spin. (It looks like a helicopter if I don't.) It's slid down over (and pivots on) the VHF antenna, so I don't like to take it on and off much so it will stay tight on the antenna.
