I have had opposing stories about leaving the transmission (in or out) of gear while sailing. On one hand, I have heard that some have attached an alternator to the shaft and used it to produce electricity while sailing. (I like the idea)On the other hand, Some tell me that it is not good on the transmission and drivetrain to let it (freewheel). Always put the transmission gear to keep it from turning.I have a 2 blade prop attached to a Hurth transmission. Does it reduce drag by freewheeling? I am sure there is more wear on the packing gland and cutlass bearing, but is it enough to really matter?Comments please!
