Let prop freewheel?

I have had opposing stories about leaving the transmission (in or out) of gear while sailing.On one hand, I have heard that some have attached an alternator to the shaft and used it to produce electricity while sailing. (I like the idea)On the other hand, Some tell me that it is not good on the transmission and drivetrain to let it (freewheel). Always put the transmission gear to keep it from turning.I have a 2 blade prop attached to a Hurth transmission. Does it reduce drag by freewheeling? I am sure there is more wear on the packing gland and cutlass bearing, but is it enough to really matter?Comments please!

1985 C27

The owners manual for my 1985 C27 with a Hurth Tranny say's to put the tranny in neutral for free wheeling or in reverse to lock the prop. My engine is an M18 (14hp) with a Hurth HBW-50 transmission.

Prop Freewheeling

The Hurth transmission should be put in reverse when under sail as to preserve the tranny. Do not keep it in neutral or forward when under sail!

Clutch Glazing

I agree with Ron. The freewheeling prop can increase clutch glazing on the Hurth which, ultimately, may result in slippage.

Transmission Noise

aside from the manufacturer's recommendations, when I leave my transmission in neutral, the noise of the rotation of the shaft (which sounds like it's lubed with sand) precludes freewheeling. Is there something wrong here?

What it could cost.....

My '87 30 Tranny(Hurth)was having slipage problems in forward. Rebuilding the tranny cost $1000+. When you sail set it in reverse. Align it if it makes you feel better or get a folding prop.
