I'm looking for a port (red) lens for my navigational light on a 1978 Hunter 25. The current light works, but the lens is discolored to white. It is about 1 1/4" in diameter, accessed via the anchor well and about 3/16" thick best I can tell. Any leads on where to find a replacement?? Thanks for your assistance!!!

Liaght shapes have changed since 1978 and I doubt you will find a replacement. I will suggest that you take the light and compare it to the ones offered in the West Marine Cataloge. If you cannot find it, then buy a new light. Also, sometimes the cost of a replacment lens is about the same cost of the light.

You may be in luck

Looking at the photo of the early 25 it looks like you have those tear drop shaped flush mounted lights. I think they are still being made. You might want to check with Catalina since they also used these lights for a number of years on thousands of boats. They seem to keep a pretty good supply of old parts on hand. It may come down to replacing the entire unit. A couple of years ago they ran about $30.00 but then again you get new gaskets, sockets etc. If I was going that route, I would opt for the Acqua Signal series 25 bow light and bracket put on the front of the bow pulpit. Less current and brighter light.

Taging Onto What Jeff Said......

If you have the teardrop style I would change them out in a heartbeat for something with better visibility. The Aqua Signal 25 or equal as Jeff mentioned would be my choice too. A couple years ago we were on our summer cruise and a couple in their Chrysler 25 sailboat (I think that's what it was) was T-boned by a fast aluminum sport fishing boat, twin high-horsepower outboards, also about 25 foot long. The fishing boat "ran up" on their coach roof and actually broke the boom, caved in the coach roof, deck, gunnel, and part of the hull. Fortunately the couple got out of the accident with only some minor injuries but their running lights may have been a factor in the collision. Their lights were the teardrop type, also faded lenses, and I'm sure were difficult to see. Given todays modern skyline with lights all over the place it is very difficult at best sometimes to see small running lights with this backdrop of lights. I'd highly recommend erring on the side of more candlepower and go with bigger running lights. It doesn't hurt to keep the lenses covered when the boat is at the dock on sitting on a trailer, either. The plastic lenses will stay chrisper much longer. When replacing them I'd also recommend using some silicone dielectric grease on the wire terminals (those little brass screws) and bulb contacts and marine grade heat shrink tubing on any butt-joint connectors.

SEA DOG LENSES

On my '82 H25 the tear drop nav lights are Sea Dog Brand. I had Boaters World order replacement lenses for me at about $7 each. Hope this helps.

Sea Dog Lens

Thank you fellow sailors for the leads! Since only my port lamp is discolored, and if I can get it for less than $10, I'll probably go that route. I did see the West Marine combo bow light and that seems to make some sense given the story John mentioned-don't want any powerboats hitting my boom! One dark night on Lake Lanier, I could hear voices around me--turned out to be another sailboat with NO lights--what a scary proposition!! Thanks again-smooth sailing and fair winds!! Rette

Found the lens!

Catalina direct has the lens in a pair. Part # Z2336, Lens for Flush Mount Side Light. $9.95 plus shipping from California ($4). Very nice people 1-800-959-7245--even nice to a Hunter owner!! Thanks again for the ideas and leads! Rette

Wrong Code for Light?

Rette, I called the Catalina # because I was interested in ordering the lights myself and they said that was the wrong item number? I would appreciate if you could double check the item number you posted. Thanks.
