The rope for my mainsail and jib is molded and worn, let alone too short. Could some one tell me about buying new rope for the mast mainsail and jib, the best way to measure and the size necessary.

I have an O'Day 23.

Thank you for your help,

Robert Sylvester

Rope! Are you talking about halyards which are made out of a length of LINE?

I assume you are asking about the halyards? Or perhaps hte mainsheet and Jibsheets, well here are the sizes and lengths for hte 1977-85 23, I would assume that the older 23 would have similar lengths. Your best bet is to call Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine (508) 644-3001 he sells pre-made running rigging for all O'DAY models. Also available on his web site www.drmarine.com If you have a question, for Rudy, a phone call is better than e-mail.

O’DAY 23 RIGGING SPECS FOR 1977-85 MODELS

Standing Rigging Specs.

Headstay: 5/32” x 29’
Upper Shroud:5/32” x 28’
Lower Shrouds: 5/32” x 14’2”
Backstay: 5/32” x 28’8”
Backstay piece below mainsheet attachment triangle: 5/32” x 16”

All Standing rigging is SS 1x19 type wire and lengths are with turnbuckle (where applicable) closed, from eye to eye (most riggers measure with turnbuckles half-closed, so be sure to note this and/or bring old rigging to rigger to measure for replacement)

I found the measurements I used when I had my replacement rigging made over ten years ago. With one exception (the upper shrouds), it seems to match closely Sunbird's standard specs:

Lower shrouds
14’4”
Upper shrouds
28’
Forestay
29’1”
Backstay
28’11’ to triangle; 16” triangle to chainplate

Sunbird:

Thank you very much; you're kind to assist me. Please excuse my lack of termanology, which I do know, but it was a question I needed help with.

The remaining rigging seem to be in good shape, but someone had also cut up the main halyards to both the main and the jib before I purchased the boat. I got a good deal: 23 O'Day, rigging, sails, (main, jib, spinnaker), trailer, Nissan 7.5 motor-$1,500.00. And it floats. Some leakage in the cabin and the drain from the cock pit needs repair. Working on sealing the hardware and replacing some hatches.

Otherwise it is a great project. I am in Tennessee but I want to move to Lake Murray in South Carolina.

Some things were missing but I am replacing as I go along.

Again thank you for your help and knidness.

Robert Sylvester
