After sitting for several years the turnbuckles on the rigging were frozen, even WD-40 didn't hep with the mast to aft cable. In a demonstration of muscle v brains I managed to twist hard enough to snap the threaded end of the rigging at the top of the turnbuckle. Now I have two questions: 1. Can the threaded end of the rigging cable be replaced or do I need to purchase a whole new cable? 2. and if the latter above, does anyone have an o'Day manual that specifies the length of that wire cable? A new stay would solve this problem
You're probably better off to take the backstay off and bring it along with the turnbuckle with the broken bolt, to a rigger. He can make you a new one just like it. Check the other stays to make sure the wires and turnbuckless are okay. If you have any with broken strands, you're better off replacing them now. I had an inner side stay let go one day while sailing near Newport RI, and the mast disappeared into the water so fast that I didn't even see it go. It was that fast. I looked down in the water and there was my mast, all bent in half, with the sails and stays still connected to it. Luckily, I had insurance to cover the cost which went about $2400.00. The 1986 O'Day 192 is a nice little boat, and a fast sailer for it's size. One of my friends has one with a CDI Roller Furler on it.
