I am looking to replace the mast on my 222 and need the actual length of the mast. Anyone have a web site that will give the specs or have any knowledge as to its length?

Hi. My Owners Mannual is with boat at the moment. But O’Day changed ownership at some late 80’s point and hull ID prefix changed then. This is important as mast systems changed then also, including how the halyards run and most importantly, how it is mounted to the boat deck. My’84 mast is not directly/ easily interchangeable with my friends ‘88.

True, sort-of.
O'DAY did use at least two different Masts (different suppliers) on the 222, overall length should not be vastly different, but some years they used a Z-SPAR brand mast and boom, other years a DWYER MASTs mast and boom. Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine should have info as to what years used which spar supplier. D&R Marine: (508) 644-3001

Good to know Sunbird.
The important mounting differences is what is important regarding the initial question, not just length. The mast to deck mounting system ican be quite different; and I recall my friend thinking the stays and shrouds mounted somewhat differently. So a direct swap/ replacement could not occur even if it were the same length. Calling Rudy is a good idea but also taking a photo of the ‘base to boat’ mount will be vip when ordering the replacement mast to verify how it’s deck mounting operates.

Check out some of our old friend Joe Alves' posts about his 222, TRINKA (1986 model). He had to replace his mast at some point (after a dismasting due to chainplate failure?) and he has a pretty good picture story of the change from the original Z-Spar mast to the replacement DWYER. Yes, the mast bases are VERY different on the 2 brands! This also applies to the 192 as well!

PS: Anyone looking for a well-equipped, well cared for by her original owner (and at least maintained? by current, second owner) O'DAY 222? Check out Craig's-List for the South Coast of Massachusetts........... $4000.00 will buy TRINKA! Includes Joe's kayak and small dinghy, plus over-sized trailer and all his upgrades and mods. My Budget isn't ready to search out a 222 yet........ but if someone else is ready...........

Further to Sunbird's comments, there are quite a few differences between the original Z-Spars mast base, and the current mast base being sold by www.rigrite.com.

If given the choice, Dwyer seems to be the better choice. The Z-Spars mast has a reputation for being a bit weaker overall. Of course, if you originally have a Z-Spars, and you only need the mast extrusion, then get another, as you'll be able to move your hardware over to the new extrusion. This goes for Dwyer as well. But if you are starting 100% from scratch, and you will be buying the extrusion, mast head and base, hounds, spreader brackets and spreaders, and cleats, etc. then I'd get a Dwyer, and I'd probably work closely with Rudy at www.drmarine.com and www.dwyermast.com on getting the spar all set up properly.

I have replaced a stock Z-Spars mast base and deck mount hardware on a 192 in the past, so I know the differences, if anyone has questions.

Ditto on the call to Rudy. I just recently replaced the standing rigging on my '84 222 w/Dwyer mast. Rudy called me after I ordered on line to ask for the hull # as there were some changes in the length of the stays at one or points during the production run.
