I just had a spinnaker halyard put on my 40.5 and it seems a bit counter-intuitive. The halyard exits the mast where I'd expect but then goes down to a block on the top of the jib halyard cowling (the bell shaped piece over the jib halyard exit). Seems like it ought to just exit the mast and skip going to that block. Anyone got a spinnaker-rigged 40.5 that can respond? Rick D. PS: my manual is on the boat, so I can't check it right now.

Hi Rick, I cannot comment on your model, but on...

our model the base of the mast has four sheaves, two on each side, one of which I use for the spinnaker halyard. The halyard comes down the mast, through the sheave, into the organizer and sheet stopper. Terry

Terry, I'm Referring To The Exit At The Top

Sorry I didn't make that clear. Rick D.

I'll Get A Photo

What I mean Fred, is that the halyard exits the mast above the jib crane about 18" higher (as you'd expect for a fractional-rig), but from there it goes to a swivel block on top of the jib halyard crane. Weird. What I am calling the jib halyard crane is a bell-like thing attached to the mast where the jib halyard enters. I won't be able to get any pix until next week. I'm hoping my manual has something on it. This rigger is supposed to be one of the best around, ....but the setup looks just too odd. And, fred, right now the spinnaker halyard is holding up my jib sock. Rick D.

spinnaker halyard

On my 37.5 the spin halyard also exits 15" above the jib halyard and goes directly to the sail. I store it to the bail on the anchor roller which keeps it clear of the roller furling jib.I also use that bail for my tack downhaul which is lead back. I have had a chafe problem about 30" back from the sail on the halyard, which I think is on the sheave box for the jib in the mast. I singlehand alot and found that an external halyard off of the "eyes" just above the jib allows me hoist and set or snuff and drop without going back and forth.

Chafing prevention

Just a guess, but my understanding is that by passing the halyard through the block and then to the sail, the spinnaker is free to fly without chafing the halyard. The normal motion of a spinnaker, sometimes side to side, can chafe the halyard at the exit from the mast. Mine did. I now lead my spinnaker halyard to a similar loop on my mast and have had peace of mind since. Paul

So Mutch For Intuition....

Thanks guys. It seemed counter-intuitive since it seemed I was giving up so much SA this way, but it is obvious that's the correct way to rig it. I really appreciate the help solving this. Rick D. PS: shows the value of pulling the stick once and a while, or at least going up and down.

Wow, Alan...

You get an almost full masthead hoist out of that! Must be one big spinnaker. RD

Rules for PHRF rating

I thought sometime ago I was told that it had to do with the rules for PHRF rating or something. If it comes out straight it is comparable to a masthead rig. something along the lines that the 40.5 is a fractional rig so the halyard has to come down to within X of the jib; otherwise its a violation. Just speculating at this point. If you're cruising, do as you please.

You can make any changes you want. You must report them to your local PHRF for review of handicap. Local PHRF's are autonomous and make their own rules (within limits) and one area rules do not necessarily agree with another.

Marco,

...that's exactly how I thought it should go, but from the posts here and from how my rigger put it, i suspect I'm wrong. I'm going to look over the rigging documentation in my manual. Thanks a lot for your help. PS: great photos and a really nice spinnaker! Rick D.

What My Rigger Said, Marco re: 40.5 Spin Halyard

Marco, I talked to my rigger today who said the boat was rated (for racing) using the block below the halyard exit as a lead. He said it also protects the halyard from chafe. For what it's worth, if I were you I wouldn't change your setup unless you have chafe on the halyard. Rick D. PS: the manual in the spinnaker portion is silent on that aspect.
