Hello All, The mainsail cover on my Legend 40.5 with a Dutchman system has seen its last days. Has anyone had any luck with the pre-patterned covers from the Online Chandlery? The advertised price is $445.00 +$14.00 shipping. Thanks Frank

Had mine made locally

Hey Frank, I had mine made locally so I knew it would fit. The basic price was about the same as the one on this site, but that way I knew it was going to fit around the Dutchman. Plus, he gave some really good suggestions for improvements. The guy does great work, and is located in South Gate. Let me know if you want his number.

Thanks Karl

I was just trying to pinch some pennies and thought that it may be worth it to do mail order...no tax etc. But you are right, it would be a major hassle if the Dutchman lines did not line up correctly. Did you have anything special on yours that may make it easier to put on/remove….particularly while balancing on the mast steps?? Frank

Sometimes it does not pay to pinch pennies! I got a good fit, and a good quality product. The only problem is balancing on the mast steps to get the top snap. Go with velcro for the top band around the mast. One thing I would do different is the canvas guy talked me into a triange to cover the vang, and a second triange area to cover the mainsheet area. Problem is with a lined cover, it is heavy as heck! A second suggestion came from my sail guy. I got 3, 6-inch squares of Sunbrella and cut a line half way through. I use these under the cover and around the Dutchman lines to hold down sun exposure on the mainsail. If you want to see the final product, I'm over in Redondo Beach, but you should really check out the dodger he made for us. I am done with the mainsail cover

I have ordered a new sail cover that stays on the boom for our 1995 Legend 40.5 I am having it made by my local UK sail guy in Bayfield. He calls it a sail cradle. Anyway, it will be nice not having to find someplace to stow the cover while underway and I really won't miss wrestling that monster into place. The only way I can reach the end of the boom is to stand on the table in the cockpit.

Pull to the side!

I just pull the boom over to the starboard side. That way you just stand on the lazerette.

It's fairly easy to measure for the Dutchman cut-outs

Our canvas shop has been making mainsail covers for over 20 years and they do an outstanding job. Name brand Sunbrella in any color you want. Anything you buy here comes with our satisfaction guarantee. Here's a link to the worksheet that would automatically accompany your order: http://shop.sailboatowners.com/emp/measure/r.htm?s=msd
