There is some confussion about the correct handicap for a Legend Hunter 35.5 as listed in the Portsmouth 2000 book. Portsmouth provides two ratings: one for a Legend 35 and another for a Hunter 35.5. My boat is listed as a Legend Hunter 35.5 by the manufactor. What is the difference between a Legend 35 and a Hunter 35.5? Is it in the keel? Right now I use the Legend 35 rating of 81.5 and believe it is correct. Any ideas or suggestions?

35.5 handicap

The two boats you mention in your post are different models. From the front page of this web-site select the boats and check the specifications for these two models. The 35 was built from 86-88, and the 35.5 started in production in 89 running through 95. I'm having simalar difficulties with the portsmouth system. I handicap our clubs regatta and have a 1999 copy of the yardstick. I looked up both of these boats and found that the ratings have parentheses and brackets around them. According to the instructions in the yardstick tables, ratings with parentheses are based on a limited amount of reporting data. The ones with brackets are based on even less data. Both are highly suspect. Darlene Hobock is the chair person in charge of the Portsmouth yardstick, and would be the one to contact with questions regarding ratings. I have been trying to contact her as well on another issue involving the H26 water ballast. Her e-mail address is hobockd@aol.com I'm currently waiting for a reply from her from an e-mail I sent on Sunday and have not received a reply as of yet. I have had trouble trying to get help from her in the past. I suggest you try her first and if you don't receive a reply contact US Sailing to complain. As for your original question, these two boats are different models and have different ratings. It is just a matter of how accurate they are. If I can be of any help you can e-mail me at sailpyc@yahoo.com Howard Sherman Pahokee Yacht Club
