Can a brokerage sell a boat trailer that is not street legal? For used boats/trailers is it a case of buyer beware, or is the brokerage responsible for selling only legal products?

"as is" condition

I believe that brokerage boats are sold in "as is" condition, which may not be in compliance with all regulations. I do not know of specific legal requirements of a broker to make sure that the boat/trailer meets all safety regulations and the like. That is why many people use a marine surveyor/mechanic to determine the condition of the boat. Regards, Ted

Not required here

I don't know about Wa., but in Md. any vehicle, trailer, etc can be sold as is. It is the responsibility of new owner to get it isspected make it street legal. Now if he sold it to you with an inspection ticket or claimed it was legal & it wasn't, that is probably another story.

Check your state DMV

Any local office of your state licensing agency will be able to give you the answer for your state regulations. I believe the other responses are correct in that trailers/boats/cars/etc can be sold as is and it is the new owners responsibility to bring the unit up to standard unless otherwise stated in the sales contract.
