Would like to hear from anyone who has purchased Lee Sails. Interested in pros and cons, how well these sails perform and hold up, and any other information helpful in making a buying decision. Thanks in advance.

They make good sails.

Warren: They make good sails. You just want to get a quote on everything being the same between an American loft and Lee. Be sure that you are getting the same material (brand, model & fabric weight). Make sure that you have all things equal and you will find out their real price. Ed Schenck purchased Lee sails for his H/37C and thinks that they are high quality and seems very happy. The other thing you loose by purchasing a sail from an off shore loft like this is you don't get the sail maker to come to your boat and talk about your sailing enviroment and these types of things.

Lee Sails main

I had a main sail built by them last year. The sail is excellent. I had the wrong slides sent to me first, but they paid for all shipping and had the problem corrected. It took about three weeks to correct but I realize they had to send it back to Hong Kong or wherever. Another friend got a sail from them on my recommendation, had some problems getting measurements right, his measuring mistakes, so do your measuring correctly when you submit your order; my experience, its a good deal. Lee Sails

I agree that it is nice to have a sailmaker come to your boat to take the measurements and discuss your specific needs and any unique boat requirements. Yet this is a costly affair. The price differential that I've found so far between Lee and sailmakers who would come to my boat is about $332,or more than one third of the price of the Lee Sail....

Ask Your Local Sail Maker

I have talked to my local sail maker about Lee sails. He had a lot to say about them. Yes, the sails work. Are they truely fitted to the boat? No, just a close facisimile. Every boat made has a factory spec. He showed me the specs on my boat. I also discussed a sail that I had bought that would not trim completely. That sail was made with factory specs. I have found a way to deal with the problem but it would still be nice to have a sail that trims properly with no micky-duck rigging. My Sailmaker explained all the critical points in a sail, the material, the fittings, the thread and the assembly. I am having a new sail made, in the spring, right here by a sailmaker that I trust. I have sails from my boats that were original. The ones that were not used hard are still powerful sails. The ones that were used show their wear. I am counting on my new sail being of high quality so that replacement will be a long way down the road. Yes, they may cost $200-$500.00 more but I am counting on getting a good sail that will last. I like to sail my boat hard and I like my sails to trim. I think it will be money well spent. r.w.landau
