My 1985 B&Gs are getting hard to see so I took them apart and tried to polish the plastic covers over the readouts. Not any help. Do LEDs emit less light over time. I suspect this is my problem.

Try adjusting contrast if digital. See manual.
Also they are not LED, but LCD if digital. Night illumination on any 80's units are likely little incandescent bulbs. Replacing them would make the light brighter.
Don't polish the lenses if they're plastic. It will make them much, much worse, if you use the wrong cleaner.

The answer to the question do LED's emit less light over time is YES good quality LED's will last a very long time. The trouble is the cheap one's that come from China will sometimes be half bright in 30 days of continuous use rather than years for a quality LED. Buyers at companies only see cheap and buy them without regard to quality. It is really a problem we should all be concerned about, inferior product from China. Not all product that comes from China is inferior I just want to make that clear

Skipper is correct. Lcd's , not leds. And more than likely incandescent backlighting.
