Most LED's are labeled as to wave length

of emitted light. incadecent lights loose considerable brightness when placed behind a colored filter. You don't need a colored lens if the source of the light is the proper color to start with.

The manufacturers have them certified

First off, I like LED's. I want to see certified LED replacements for running lights. I don't like climbing masts to change light bulbs, I don't like charging customers $75/hr travel to and from their boat to change $2 bulbs. I also cannot sell lights that are not certified. I try to keep up on what works and what doesn't so I can recommend good solutions. I'm not trying to bust anyones chops. But when someone wants to go to a flea market and get some crap that will fit into the sockets and light up, it burns me up. Good News. I found some LED running lights that have been tested to comply with USCG COLREG 1972 (IMO) standards and verify conformance with the navigation light regulations of ABYC A-16. The Aqua Signal Series 32 LED lights have passed certification tests in 2006 for 2nm lights. This is a link to the 7 page test report that got one of the lights certified: http://www.ks-networx.de/aquasignal/files/content/1419680196__led_series_32_sbb_16657_2.pdf I still cannot find a replacement bulb that is certified. But I'll keep looking. mastlight.com offers no such proof of certification ... So the answer is yes, you can find proof of certification for proper marine lights. If the manufacturer of the bulb has not had it certified for marine use, you have to testify that the bulbs you use meet the standard. Use un-certified bulbs at your own risk.

Just an FYI

We just added LED nav lights to the chanldery here. They meet the USCG requirements for brightness, distance, and arc, and sell for $42.95.

Thanks Phil!

Great! I knew that they were working on getting bulb replacements for Aqua Signals certified, I didn't know that they got it. :) Also great to know that legal bulbs are available right here! Good job. Randy

Whoa there!

I don't believe they are _certified_; I was looking for that and didn't find anything to support certification. But they do claim to meet USCG requirements which is good, but not quite the same thing. :) I don't have personal experience with LED's for boating, but I do know from the automotive world that they are not all the same. I have one pair on my Yamaha FZ1 that will burn your retinas, but another pair that is more like a glow. Both are called super-bright by their manufacturers. Also, you want to double check the metals used in construction. Cheap lights may have cheap bases that will corrode.

Not yet ... :(

I just got off the phone with Dr. LED +1.604.628.7734 The lights are in the process of getting USCG Certification. They expect them to be certified in December of 2006. Very cool stuff! Mast lights that will last the life of the boat? Worth every penny.

100,000 hours = 11 years = WORTH EVERY PENNY! Of course I suspect you would have to do maintenance on the connections, but that could be scheduled instead of a non-scheduled bulb replacement. PS. 2 years ago they were $142.00

That's what good LED's cost

For once, I'm happy to say, this is not just because it's for a boat. It's what good LED's cost these days and I'd be surprised if you can find a comparable product for less. Of course, you can find a lousy product for less. If you don't mind dimmer bulbs that you have to replace more often, by all means buy the cheap ones.

USCG Certified LED Navigational Lights

You can get LED certified navigational lights, but the ones currently available are expensive. There is a company in Texas that builds them for the USCG ships and US Navy ships. These LED navigational lights are built just like the military HUMMER, rugged and durable. Fair Winds, Clyde http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/2/prweb345671.htm
