Hello folks, I am looking for an LED cluster anchor light. Is there such thing on the market and if so, is it legal?

It may not be an LED, but at $120 less than the LED bulb is good value especially as it is low draw, has 2 miles vis and has a photocell to turn on/off

mega light not legal as anchor light

At least not the last time I looked. I love my LED lights including - especially - the anchor light. Turn the anchor light on and the amp meter jumps a little and then settles back to near zero

LED light

Thank you all for the info. Debra, are you using the First star mark II from Hot wire? Reading the specs, they suggest that the bulb NOT be used if certification is required, since they don't make the mounting unit. Did you have any issues with the CG? Pricy little sucker ah? Specially the multistar!

Certified Anchor Lights

are only required on new boats, built (or imported) after November 1/03. US law now requires all boats built after November 1, 2003 to have “Certified” Navigation Lights, as per USCG 33 CFR 181.15. To become “Certified”, each navigation light must: 1) Meet the technical standards of the applicable Navigation Rules. 2) Be certified by a (USCG listed) Laboratory to the standards of ABYC ‘A-16' 3) Bear a label (which has 8 items) ABYC section ‘A-16' details the technical requirement of navigation lights, including (but not limited to): - Installation & Location - Visibility Range and Configuration - Photometrics & Chromaticity Generally speaking (in part): Vessels under 12m (39 Feet) require a minimum of 2 Mile Visibility (4.3 Candela @ 0.80 K) and Vessels between 12 & 20 m (65 Feet) require min. 3 mile visibility (12 Candela @ 0.80 K) An anchor light may meet the technical requirements (2 or 3 mi. visibility) of the regulations & standards, and still not be “Certified”.

No law, but if you get run down with an LED anchor

light and they find out its not USGC "certified" I think they lawyers would have a field day. I know this is all rhetorical, but its one of those things. I think its BS. BTW I have seen some of these LED lights approved by SOLAS (international Safety regulations)

I haven't read the rules in a while, but

isn't it still true that a anchor light is NOT required in a CHARTED anchorage? You know, the anchor symbol shown on the chart.

Mother Nature Rules

Fred, I think you are correct however as long as MN keeps turning out the lights at night and allows the dew point and the temperature to be the same, I will keep turning on a strong anchor light and maybe more!

Just thought about this - Than why is it ok

for a those old fashioned oil/kerosene lamp on old style boats? I heard that they are ok by the CG. I think you'd probably be fine using the LED anchor lights just as long as you could see them @ 2 miles, but manufacturers must only use the "approved" certified ones when building new.

Megalight

There are 2 versions of the Megalight - the anchor light has a bracket for your Windex and supposedly has a range of 2nm. Don't know if it's certified.

Anchor light not required

in a Special Anchorage, as designated on the chart and in the Coast Pilot. An anchor light IS required in a designated anchorage, also as described on the charts and in the Coast Pilot. Special anchorages are ofetn mooring fields or close by them and relatively small in area while designated anchorages can cover a lot of territory.
