Hi Peggy, I have a Restored Columbia 41 with 1 head. I use it in the chesapeake bay, and once every year or 2 we go down the ICW to Florida and The Bahamas. I am considering installing a lectrasan , some areas we go to on the ICW are brackish or fresh. Should I get the Purasan that uses clorine tablets? Do I still need a holding Tank? Any other Ideas? Thanks, Brian D.

Go with the Lectra/San..for several reasons

The PuraSan is only certified for use with 3 toilets, all Raritan: Crown, Crown II, Atlantes. So unless your toilet is one of those, it won't be legal. But even if you do, the PuraSan doesn't use chlorine tablets. The chlorine is supplied by a cartridge containing a single "tablet"...the flush water goes through the cartridge that has to be mounted above the toilet. A cartridge lasts about a s season, maybe two, depending on much the boat is used. Replacement cartridges for the PuraSan are a whopping $80 plus HAZMAT shipping. Due to HAZMAT shipping, few if any dealers carry it...so you'd have to order it directly from Raritan, which could be very inconvenient from the Bahamas. Salt, otoh, is cheap and readily available everywhere. You can either install an optional salt tank, or just add 2 tablespoons (one coffee measure) of table salt manually to each flush. I'd recommend installing a tank too...just a small one--10-12 gallons...you'll have to use it in the Keys, and you could drop into a small no-discharge harbor or marina along the way.

Thanks for the Info, I Ordered your Book.

Thanks, That is kind of the plan I had, a lectrasan and a small tank, I was thinking about the Purasan but not now. You helped make my decision. I look forward to your book, even though my boat dosn't stink. And I DO NOT have a Hunter 41, It is a Columbia.:) Thanks, Brian D.

And a great looking boat it is, too!

I went to your website. Columbias are NICE.:) Thanks for buying my book! While on your website, I checked your sanitation link...glad you thought enough of my "...Fact vs. Folklore" article there to post a link to it, but it's gone. I can think of a good replacement for it, though. :) You'll like the Lectra/San. In warm waters, it'll prob'ly require cleaning 2-3 x year to remove mineral buildup on the electrodes--which doesn't require taking it apar, btw...just a solution of muriatic acid poured into it through the toilet. So if you're gonna spend much time cruising out of the country, you might want to make sure you have some onboard. It'll let you know when it needs it...the low salt light will come on 'cuz the mineral buildup "insulates" the electrodes. That's about all the maintenance it should ever need.
