The previous owner of my boat ('87 Oday 322) was a live aboard owner, and installed a LectraSan. I bought the boat about a year ago, and have been trying ever since to fix a bad odor problem. After reading your sage advice, I finally decided this past weekend to replace all the sanitation hoses with SeaLand OdorSafe, since the old hoses were apparently the original ones, and they showed signs of odor penetration. During the job, I had to remove the LectraSan. I soon figured out that the LectraSan was the source of most of the odor. The contents were vile, and after a thorough cleaning, I still can't get the smell out of the unit.I'm not sure if the unit was working properly either before or after I bought the boat, but it goes through all the motions, and cycles as if it's doing its job. I'm not sure how old it is, but id has the old wind-up type control unit. I'm a little concerned about the wiring installation, and think maybe it wasn't getting enough power to sanitize the waste. Everything I've heard and read about LectraSans says they should not cause odors, and in fact should help eliminate them. But if it stinks like this, I'm surprised anyone has one.Is there a way to clean the unit to remove the odors? If I can't get the odors out, I do not want to re-install it. I'm not living on the boat, so relying on the holding tank is a viable option, but I like the idea of not having to get the tank pumped out so often. Any advice you could provide would be much appreciated.
