LectraSan Worth Saving?

The previous owner of my boat ('87 Oday 322) was a live aboard owner, and installed a LectraSan. I bought the boat about a year ago, and have been trying ever since to fix a bad odor problem. After reading your sage advice, I finally decided this past weekend to replace all the sanitation hoses with SeaLand OdorSafe, since the old hoses were apparently the original ones, and they showed signs of odor penetration. During the job, I had to remove the LectraSan. I soon figured out that the LectraSan was the source of most of the odor. The contents were vile, and after a thorough cleaning, I still can't get the smell out of the unit. I'm not sure if the unit was working properly either before or after I bought the boat, but it goes through all the motions, and cycles as if it's doing its job. I'm not sure how old it is, but id has the old wind-up type control unit. I'm a little concerned about the wiring installation, and think maybe it wasn't getting enough power to sanitize the waste. Everything I've heard and read about LectraSans says they should not cause odors, and in fact should help eliminate them. But if it stinks like this, I'm surprised anyone has one. Is there a way to clean the unit to remove the odors? If I can't get the odors out, I do not want to re-install it. I'm not living on the boat, so relying on the holding tank is a viable option, but I like the idea of not having to get the tank pumped out so often. Any advice you could provide would be much appreciated.

Odor means it's not working

My guess is, the previous owner never cleaned the electrodes...that they're so encrusted with sea water calcium carbonates that they no longer work. I suspect too, that he may have flushed a lot without running it. And it could have other problems--blown fuses, for instance. It can be cleaned without taking it apart. Directions are in the manual for the current model on the Raritan website (link below). However, that may not be enough...so I suggest you talk with Vic Willman at Raritan...800-352-5630 x 2. He'll help you trouble shoot it and advise whether it's worth keeping. IMO, if it's not, it's worth replacing IMO. When a Lectra/San is working properly, there is NO odor, and freedom from tank maintenance and pumpout is a joy. Boatfix has 'em for about $650, which is the best price on the planet...a decent quality holding tank will cost you at least half that much if you also install a macerator and y-valves.

If you replace it....

David, If you decide to replace the LectraSan and are interested in selling the wind up control unit, please email me at tsiklm@ceinetworks.com. I have the same model as yours and the control gave up the ghost not long ago and I dread the thought of installing a new unit, given the space constraints in my H 27. If I can't find a replacement wind up control unit, I'll likely buy a new LectraSan at $650 instead of paying $400 for the "upgrade" kit. A properly working LectraSan is worth every penny when you consider the hassle of a holding tank. Thanks, Keith

I fixed it

Thanks Peggy. I called Vic at Raritan. He told me how to rid the unit of its odor (fill it completely with bleach and water and let it sit for a while) and how to test it to make sure it works. Turns out the problem was probably electrical in nature, but possibly too low salinity. Sorry Keith. I think I'll hang onto it.
