Hello,

So, why do most people use holding tanks or porta-potys?

Why shouldn't I just put in one of these lectrasan type devices?

Are they expensive?

I am in the Chesapeake (baltimore area).

Roy,
The current usage would put me off. I'd rather use the Watts for
refrigeration.
There's an interesting opinion from a Lectrasan user at
and I'm sure Googling "Lectrasan" would find more e-pinions.

Roy, The problem with the Lectrasan is that although it sterilizes the poop
it is still poop. When it hits the water it becomes fertilizer for the germs
already in the water. I don't think they are legal for no discharge zones
which includes just about everywhere. The biggest hassle is with E coli
bacteria of which there are different strains. The kind that you get from
eating undercooked ground meat came out of a mammal. Usually a cow. One kind
can eat your organs from the inside out. On a somewhat better note the other
big concern is hepititis A. For most people it's about as bad as the flu.
For 1 in 100,000 it can be fatal. There is a vacination for it. Very common
in Mexico.
As Peter said you can use the electricity better elsewhere. I grew up on
the Chesapeake. You are going to find your icebox woefully inadequate during
the summer there. It has about one inch of foam insulating it. Think about
upgrading your battery capacity and charging systems and then a
refrigeration system.
As an aside, the 12volt coolers that you plug into a lighter type outlet
probably won't do the job.
