Does anyone know of a good spot to leave a trailer and truck for three weeks in the Penetang/Midland of Georgian Bay area in late June? It will need to be close to a ramp and I usually get the boat lifted out with a travel lift or crane.

Thanks

david

If you need a travel lift, why do you need a ramp.

Travel lifts in Penetanguishene are at Dutchmans Cove, Bay Moorings, Beacon Bay, Hindsons. In Midland, Bay Port and Doral.

Bay Moorings has a ramp, and there is also a ramp at the town docks in Penetang with parking available, but town does not have travel lift. Not sure about ramps at other marinas, we're at Bay Moorings.

All have parking available for the trailer etc.

I suggest call them and get rates etc.

I can also give you some links to sites etc. for contact info...

My solution for a similar problem was to store my trailer in a Mini Storage lot 8 weeks while my boat was in the Marina on Lake Pepin. I could have just as well stored the truck there as well. The cost for 8 weeks was $25. a bargain. I could have stored the boat and trailer and truck for the same.

Look around for a mini storage close by. That way it is secure in a locked yard.

We had 11 trailerable boats for a weekend get-together in 2009, and we chose Bayport in Midland as our base.

It's a nice marina, and they have a travel-lift and trailer-parking. They gave us a good deal on 2 nights plus parking.

We did visit most marinas in the Penetang/Midland area, and we thought that just about all were good spots, so you do have more than a couple of choices, depending on your specific needs. I'll defer to Scott B for more recommendations.

Hi Scott

Our plans are to launch the boat near the end of June and head up towards Little Current. Actual duration and distance achieved will depend on my wife's tolerance for anchoring out cruising. She is fine with yacht club to yacht club cruising but this will be new to her.

I have sailed out of Hindson's a few times and am fiamiliar with some of the local anchorages like Hockey Stick and Longuissa.

I have strip charts and a Ports guide. Can you think of any other publications that might be useful?

Cheers

david

I can launch from a ramp but prefer to retrieve using a crane or travel lift. I have a three foot wing keel and it is difficult to locate it precisely on my trailer.

How long of a ramp do you need to launch. Water is down 8 - 10" from last year. You may want to check on length of ramps and depths available to float the boat off the trailer. Bay Moorings may be dicey and the ramp drops off at the end, saw one large trailer stuck real good for several hours, but they do use the ramp to launch power boats all spring and fall.

I'll get back to your other trip questions tonight when I have more time.

You have the strip charts which are essential. I would reccomend getting some of the larger charts to put the strips in perspective as far as disance etc. Also if you plan to go out into the Bay, you'll need to see where and how to get out and back into the small craft channel and what's "out there".

Ports is excellent. I've used it for 4 seasons and it has been invaluable. Can't think of any other guides with as much in-depth info. We've done 2 trips up to Baie Fine, past Killarney and 1 other to the Bustard Islands and numerous shorter trip to the Parry Sound area, not to mention many weekends to Beckwith, Hope and Christian Islands. I've studied Ports for each trip and has been great for fuel, pumpouts, groceries and most of all, good anchorages.

You could probably do a combination of anchoring and marinas on the way. Henry's on San Souci Isl. is awesome for fish & chips and even a night stayover, Killbear Marina is decent, just at the mouth of Parry Sound. You could even get into some of the town docks etc. along the way, I can't think of locations ( book is on the boat ) but study Ports and you'll get a good idea. The town of Killarney is also a good stop over for the night or two and restocking etc. and make sure you hit the Fish & Chips bus on the town dock.

As far as anchorages, I could go on for pages with favorites. The area is outstanding for scenery. Try to pick anchorages near Crown Land, ( we do for the dog ) and get on shore to stretch your legs and enjoy the Georgian Bay feeling.

A few fav's .... Josephine Rocks at Shawanaga Island ( just north of Parry Sound), Bustard Islands, also be sure to go through Collins Inlet, and our hands down fav. Baie Fine.... let me know if I can give you any more info...
