Leather wrapped wheel

My 1999 Beneteau OC 352 came with a (black) leather wrapped steering wheel. Must've looked nice when new but mine is all faded and blemished.

Any hints on how to refurbish it? I was thinking of using shoe polish but I'm afraid it will rub off on my hands.

I don't want to replace it, just freshen it up a bit.

Thanks

You can use shoe polish but you'll want to buff the ever living heck out of it.
Another option is redye with leather dye and treat with a conditioner and wax. Again after waxing buff the heck out of it.
For my outdoor leather I use a product called Snoseal. Warm the leather with a hairdryer and make a couple of applications, then buff the heck out of it.

I'll second SnoSeal. It's a wax based product that I have had good results with on my wheel.

I re-stitched mine a couple of winters ago and coated it it with black shoe dye (in the applicator bottle). Worked great and does not rub off.

I've used SnoSeal on leather hiking boots... in the Northeast where they saw lots of snow/mud/wet conditions... great stuff. Just like Roadking Larry said... heat the leather, rub in the waxy sealer... presto! It might make sense to clean the leather a little first if it is spotty/dirty... rather than "seal"ing that stuff in...

@KennyBene your question may find an answer in another sport endeavor that relies on leather.

My thoughts exactly. Who better than a cowboy or cowgirl to help you with leather maintenance? Well, maybe a dominatrix?
Gee, now I wish I had a leather covered wheel so I too could do some research on this subject.
